THE CRISIS IN GAZA

Sarah has received a high volume of correspondence from constituents who are understandably concerned about the events taking place in the Middle East.

This page has been created to give you information about Sarah's position on the crisis, and the actions she has led or supported in Parliament on this subject.

Outline of Sarah's Position:

Sarah says “I am utterly appalled by the devastation in Gaza. The Liberal Democrats are clear – Hamas should remain a proscribed terrorist organisation and those responsible for the atrocities of 7 October must be held to account. I was glad to see the hostages released by Hamas.”

“We are clear that all parties must uphold international law. The actions of the Israeli Government have amounted to collective punishment of the Palestinian people. The International Court of Justice found that there is a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza, placing a clear obligation on the UK Government to act to prevent further violations. The Liberal Democrats do not believe the Government has done enough, and my colleagues and I have consistently pressed for stronger action.”

“In October 2025, a ceasefire came into effect which was intended to halt hostilities, secure the release of hostages, and allow humanitarian aid to reach civilians. While this was a vital step, the ceasefire has remained fragile, with continued violence and severe restrictions on aid undermining its effectiveness. A ceasefire must be upheld by all parties and lead to lasting protection for civilians.”

“Liberal Democrats want to see:

  • a full ban on all military exports to Israel,

  • a ban on goods from illegal settlements,

  • sanctions on Israeli leaders who have advocated ethnic cleansing,

  • full access for journalists and human rights monitors to Gaza and the West Bank,

  • and immediate recognition of the State of Palestine.”

“Despite the ceasefire, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains catastrophic. Aid access continues to fall far short of what is needed, and the risk of famine persists following months of blockades.”

“The Liberal Democrats categorically reject any proposals that undermine Palestinians’ right to a viable state based on pre-1967 borders. With ongoing civilian deaths in Gaza and escalating settler violence in the West Bank, it has never been clearer that a two-state solution, grounded in international law, is essential to a just and lasting peace.”
